A medical ailment known as oral thrush is a fungus in the mouth and throat, a condition which can affect even babies. All of us live with a balanced amount of candidiasis in our mouths, digestive tracts and some skin. A normal amount of Candida growth is usually regulated by physiological constraints. If something happens to cause the candidiasis to get out of equilibrium, it turns into a yeast infection. Please note: this is not the same kind of yeast infection women have in the vagina, commonly termed a ‘yeast infection,’ or vaginal candidiasis’

Causes of Oral Thrush

Causes of oral candidiasis, or thrush, range from stress, dentures, illnesses and smoking, to list just a few reasons. Sometimes, if one is taking an antibiotic, it can cause the yeast to alter its growth rate, and an infection will result. Also, if you have an ongoing illness, your immune system may become weak, making you a target for a yeast infection.

If white patches emerge in the mouth, throat and tongue, it will be painful and sore where the spots develop. A doctor or dentist can diagnose thrush. There are home remedies available, as well as medications. The exact treatment depends on the seriousness of the illness. Oral medications are for a serious case, knowing the cause and how ill the person is feeling.

Home Treatment

Home remedies may include changing one’s diet. Do not ingest sugar during the time you have thrush, and avoid rich foods. Candy, ice cream, chocolate and pastries will only feed the yeast infection. Fermented foods such as pickles, yeast breads, mushrooms, cheese and alcohol should also be avoided if one is ill with thrush. Brush your tongue gently with a new toothbrush, but not your teeth.

Rinse your mouth several times a day with water and baking soda, then just rinse with water.

Keep clear of vinegar, soy products, nuts, eggs and dairy products. Stay away from caffeinated drinks, cold cuts, hot dogs, sausages and condiments. Foods high in preservatives, spicy foods and peppers, horseradish or soy sauce will not help the healing process.

An old wives’ tale says that black walnut, which contains tannin, astringents and anti-fungal properties, will cure thrush. It is available in capsules at most pharmacies. Cinnamon is another home cure. This idea suggests you sprinkle a little cinnamon on all foods. Perhaps it can improve the taste of hot cereals and some soups.

Dried cranberries as a snack twice a day is good for a thrush condition. Also, fresh cooked cranberries, (with a touch of cinnamon) combined with a little water and made into an unsweetened drink is an excellent remedy for you, taken 2 or 3 times a day.

It is said that Oregano oil will heal this kind of Candidiasis. It can be purchased in capsules; open 2 or 3 a day and add to your food.  Add 5 to 7 drops to a glass of water to rinse and gargle with daily.

Coconut oil has great healing properties, besides being an excellent cooking ingredient. Rinse your mouth with the coconut oil and apply a small amount on the toothbrush, You can even apply it to wrinkles and dry skin for additional beauty.
