Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus known as Candida. They can affect the genitals, mouth, armpits and other areas of the body that are warm and closed off or perpetually damp. When a yeast infection exists, people can experience redness, inflammation, itching and other signs of irritation. Due to the extraordinary amount of discomfort that these infections can create, finding a fast and effective way to treat them is important.
Practice Good Prevention
One of the most common forms of yeast infection is vaginal yeast infection. Practicing good hygiene is one way to prevent recurring infections, however, it may not prove sufficient on its own. Women should take care to maintain healthy, balanced diets that are relatively low in refined sugar and simple carbohydrates. Eating too many of the wrong foods can upset the body’s natural pH balance, thereby making people more prone to an overgrowth of yeast.
Women should also look for loose-fitting clothes that get good ventilation. Panties should be made from cotton or other natural fabrics. At the very least, these should have cotton liners at the crotch. It is also important for ladies to change out of damp swimming suits and workout clothes in a timely fashion. These same preventative measures can also be used even if yeast infection already exists, in order to help expedite the recovery process, and stave off recurring infections.
Probiotics are supplements that people can take to increase the number of good bacteria in the digestive tract. This is one of the safest remedies out there and it can also provide long-lasting benefits. Yeast infections are common among people who have taken antibiotics. Many drugs that are used to kill infection are broad-spectrum, meaning that they kill good and bad bacteria indiscriminately. As a result, these medications deplete good bacteria levels, thereby creating the ideal conditions for fungal infections to flourish. Probiotics balance out the array of good bacteria, and make the body more effective at fighting these infections off.
Yogurt, especially yogurt that is high in quality, is also rich with beneficial microorganisms. Women can insert an applicator of plain, high-quality yogurt with active cultures into the vagina. Like probiotics, this will replenish stores of beneficial bacteria and help combat the infection.
Suppositories of boric acid have been demonstrated to be effective in treating vaginal yeast infections. It is important to note that once a course of treatment is started, one should continue for several days, and not use boric acid sporadically.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a powerful anti-fungal agent. This can be tempered with another base oil, and then placed on a tampon. Women should note that tea tree oil on its own can cause burning and irritation and should be mixed with coconut oil or olive oil before using. Simply place one to two drops of tea tree oil in one tablespoon of olive oil and then use this mixture to saturate a cotton tampon. This can be used in the vagina twice daily. Tea Tree Oil as a treatment for yeast infection is surprisingly effective.
Coconut oil has both antifungal and antibacterial properties. Much like tea tree oil, it can be placed on a tampon and inserted into the vagina twice daily. It can also be placed on any external areas that are showing signs of yeast infection irritation, including the vulva, buttocks, under the breast and in the armpits. For those with oral yeast infection, swirling coconut oil around the mouth is one of the safest and most effective remedies for thrush.
